RA can cause several conditions and symptoms that affect your lungs, including:
Pleural effusion: Fluid around the sac containing your lungs, which happens in about 5% of people with rheumatoid arthritis.43 This can cause chest pain, shortness of breath, and cough.5
Interstitial lung disease: The lungs form abnormal scar tissue, which can cause chest pain, shortness of breath, and cough in about 21% of people with RA.67
